India investigates pollution issues at Tata iPhone component factory; farmers report farmland contamination and skin discomfort
According to reports citing three officials and a document, the health department of an Indian state is investigating the impact of liquid waste discharged from an iPhone component factory, owned by Tata, on local farmers. Several farmers claim their farmland has been contaminated by pollutants, and they themselves have experienced skin discomfort. The health investigation marks new progress in this environmental dispute and serves as a significant test in India’s bid to become a core manufacturing base for Apple iPhones. Tata's electronics plant located in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, received a warning letter from the state pollution control board on May 25, accusing the factory of polluting underground water in the surrounding farmland. This week, Tata issued a statement saying that, after pollution control authorities completed the latest water sample testing from the plant area, they confirmed that no pollutants were detected in the samples and the related probe has been closed. The state pollution control board and local government have yet to respond to this matter. Apple has also not commented, and Tata has repeatedly declined requests for media interviews.
