Roku was initially developed within Netflix in the early 2000s as the first player, during a pivotal period when Netflix was transitioning from DVD rentals to digital streaming. Fearing that launching its own hardware would offend hardware partners such as Apple and Samsung, Netflix spun off Roku as an independent company in 2008. Nearly two decades later, as the streaming media wars entered a mature phase of consolidation, Netflix attempted to reacquire the ecosystem it had originally created, only to lose out to Fox's financial strength.```
