Artificial intelligence is evolving from a tool that answers questions into a system that can complete complex tasks on behalf of users. AI agents can compare products, arrange travel, access digital services, and manage multi-step workflows. However, most payment systems were designed for people and still depend on manual approval, identity checks, credit cards, bank accounts, or regional payment methods. Cryptocurrency payments also remain fragmented across different blockchains, wallets, tokens, exchanges, and merchant systems, which makes settlement more complex.

AEON is developing a universal crypto payment and settlement infrastructure that connects AI agents, blockchain networks, online merchants, physical retailers, wallets, exchanges, and local payment systems. Through AEON Pay, AEON Checkout, cross-chain settlement tools, and its AI Payment Framework, the project aims to support secure transactions across both on-chain and off-chain environments. In this article, we will learn what AEON is, who created the project, how its payment and settlement network works, and how the AEON token supports the ecosystem.

What Is AEON (AEON)?

AEON is a universal crypto payment and settlement middleware designed to connect blockchain assets with real-world commerce, cross-chain transactions, and AI-powered payment scenarios. It provides the infrastructure needed for users, merchants, applications, and AI agents to create payment requests, verify transaction conditions, and settle value across different blockchain and off-chain payment networks. Its main products include AEON Pay for real-world crypto payments, AEON Checkout for online merchants, cross-chain settlement tools, and the AI Payment Framework, also known as APF.

The project was created to address the fragmentation of crypto payments across different blockchains, wallets, exchanges, tokens, and merchant systems. AEON uses a unified node network to verify off-chain information, match it with on-chain activity, and coordinate settlement across supported networks. Its broader goal is to make crypto payments easier to use in everyday commerce while also providing payment infrastructure for AI agents that may need to purchase goods, services, data, subscriptions, or computing resources.

Who Created AEON (AEON)?

AEON was co-founded by Eddie Li, who serves as the project’s chief executive officer. In May 2026, AEON announced that it had raised $8 million in a pre-seed funding round led by YZi Labs. The round also included IDG Capital, HashKey Capital, Stanford Blockchain Builders Fund, Oak Grove Ventures, SevenX Ventures, Alchemy Ventures, Draper Dragon, Contribution Capital, and Uphonest Capital. AEON said the funding would support the development of its AI settlement infrastructure and its connections with blockchain ecosystems and real-world payment networks.

How AEON (AEON) Works

AEON works as a settlement middleware between users, merchants, AI agents, blockchain networks, and payment partners. A transaction begins when a user or application creates a payment request that contains details such as the amount, merchant, wallet address, supported token, and payment purpose. AEON then sends the request through its node network, where selected validators examine the transaction, verify the payment route, confirm authorization, and check whether the settlement conditions have been met.

The protocol uses a three-layer architecture. The client layer receives the payment request through a website, mobile application, wallet, AI agent, or point-of-sale terminal. The network layer distributes the request to selected master nodes for verification and consensus. The execution layer completes the final on-chain or off-chain settlement after enough validators approve the transaction. This structure allows AEON to support real-world crypto payments, cross-chain settlement, merchant checkout services, and AI-assisted transactions.

Key components of AEON include:

  • Client layer: Connects merchant applications, wallets, exchanges, point-of-sale systems, and AI agents with the AEON network. It also handles encrypted payment sessions, fraud checks, and order processing.

  • Network layer: Uses selected master nodes to verify transactions. The whitepaper proposes a combination of staking, node reputation, and verifiable random functions to choose validators and transaction proposers.

  • Execution layer: Uses a Delegated Proof of Stake model to approve and settle transactions. The proposed active validator set requires approval from at least two-thirds plus one of the participating validators.

  • Cross-chain verification: AEON validators are designed to run light clients for supported blockchains. These clients verify transaction inclusion, blockchain finality, state proofs, and validator signatures without relying entirely on third-party bridges.

  • Adaptive finality: The network applies different confirmation requirements based on the security and consensus model of each blockchain. It then converts these results into a common finality-risk score.

  • AI Payment Framework: APF translates user instructions into transaction parameters, verifies payment intent, checks the merchant, and obtains the required authorization before execution.

  • Agent identity and authorization: AEON proposes an Agent Identity Protocol, language-model-based intent verification, and zero-knowledge proofs to confirm that an AI agent is authorized to complete a transaction.

  • Payment safeguards: Users can apply spending limits, transaction-frequency controls, merchant whitelists, and manual approval requirements for larger transactions.

  • Real-world payment support: AEON connects crypto payments with merchant checkout systems and local payment rails, including QR-based payment networks in supported markets.

  • Validator security: Validators must stake AEON and maintain reliable network performance. Double-signing, extended downtime, or other protocol violations may lead to slashing penalties.

Together, these components allow AEON to coordinate payments across blockchains, merchants, wallets, and AI applications through one settlement framework. Some functions, such as independent AI-agent wallets and the full validator network, remain under development and may change as the protocol evolves.

AEON (AEON) Tokenomics

AEON is the native utility and governance token of the AEON payment ecosystem. It connects payment fees, validator staking, governance, network rewards, and liquidity incentives. The token is designed for transactions by both human users and AI agents across BNB Chain, TON, Solana, and EVM-compatible networks.
